Half-Year Report: How Bad Have Breaches Gotten?

Business is the most compromised industry, while theft in finance is surging

We’re halfway through 2017, and the Identity Theft Resource Center has some troubling news for us. There have been 698 disclosed data breaches so far in the U.S., impacting more than 10.2 million records. Business and healthcare lead the overall threatscape, with breaches in banking growing at the fastest rate. Here are three takeaways from the May 30, 2017 report.


1. Breaches in finance more than doubled in just a year.

2. Business leads in overall breaches. This industry includes retail, hospitality, transportation, utilities, and non-medical insurance companies.

3. Business and healthcare each offered the most compromised records per breach. In other words, thieves seem to score more data when hitting these industries.
