Sales Engineer

Location: Northeast (US)

What You’ll Do

  • Sell. Along with an Account Executive, you sell enterprise software. You make quota and aim to exceed it. Shocking.
  • Plan. How do we approach an account? Who do we talk to? How do we think about implementation? What are the critical needs of the prospect vs. a wish list? No thrashing about and hoping — you know how to think, commit, and act… and then adjust as things change.
  • Install and configure. You bridge the gap between shiny, bright PowerPoint slides and the actual product. Make it real. Do it — in the customer’s environment.
  • Build. Everything. Territory, revenue, documentation, presentations, demos, solutions, RFI/RFP responses… Everything. You are the front-lines and the bench all at the same time. You solve problems.
  • Deliver. Results, first and foremost… but you get there but doing all the little stuff right.
  • Details matter. Presentation matters. Timeliness matters. Professionalism matters. A saying from our SVP of Sales: “We push in our chairs.” Why? Because it matters.
  • Travel. Yup, you’re seeing prospects and customers when possible because face-time matters in building relationships. Probably on the road in the 50-75% range (depending on where in the East / Northeast you live).

Who You Are

  • A Hero. Triple-threat: experience in the security domain, ample tech skills, and you know what it takes to manage the sales process.
  • Experienced. You like scrappy startups — even better, you’ve been part of Sales teams that have punched above their weight in the past, so you know how this is done.
  • Independent. A self-reliant team player. (Nope, not an oxymoron for you.) Know when and how to ask for help but don’t need hand-holding or direct supervision 24/7.
  • Professional. Phone call, email, web meeting, in-person presentation — you handle it all with style and grace because this is a people-driven business.
  • Driven. Not afraid of a bit of heavy lifting — plenty to do with a young enterprise software product and you want to do something with impact.
  • Real. Composed on the customer-front, but unafraid to let your hair down when you get the chance… or phone-a-friend and vent… or whatever you do to blow off steam — because that’s what members of “Type A” personality sales teams do (even the quiet ones).
  • Experienced (again). Yeah, sorry. It matters right now… will be a bit before we can take on folks in junior roles. 7+ years relevant experience in selling and supporting enterprise software.

Your Range Of Skills Include

  • Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or related field
  • 5+ years sales or sales engineering experience or equivalent technical solution experience
  • Strong communication, presentation and client management skills
  • Ability to work with little supervision

Nice To Have

  • Strong security background. Knowing the terminology and other players in the space is really helpful. Beyond the fun of “Buzzword Bingo,” you can describe relative strengths and weaknesses, who begat what technology, where’s the fluff vs. substance, and so on. Domain expertise is pretty nice.
  • Experience with Hadoop. We run on it, so knowing the difference between Storm and Spark, Ranger and Sentry, and so on, is cool. Being able to talk about them with a bit of gravitas is awesome.
  • A mix of bigger – ($500M+) and smaller-sized (<$30M) company experience means you understand the struggle but also have seen it done the right way.

What We Offer You:

  • We have a creative, fun and flexible work environment
  • You’ll work with the latest technologies in big data and analytics
  • Unlimited vacation and flexible work arrangements
  • Full benefits
